Health & Wellness Program

The Commonwealth of Virginia health benefits program offers the COVA Care and COVA HDHP (High Deductible Health Plan) and COVA Health Aware statewide to full-time and part-time classified employees, early retirees and eligible family members. The plans include: medical, dental, outpatient prescription drugs and an Employee Assistance Program.

CommonHealth – the employee wellness program for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Since 1986 the Commonwealth of Virginia has offered CommonHealth to promote wellness in the workplace.

Group Insurance

Full-time permanent, salaried state employees are eligible for basic life insurance that equals two times their salary.

Additional coverage may be purchased through the Optional Group Life Insurance Program to cover a spouse and dependent children.

Retirement

Membership in the Virginia Retirement System begins on the first day of state employment and you become vested after five years of service.

Your benefit is funded through member and employer contributions to VRS, which are invested over your career. You contribute 5 percent of your compensation and Treasury also contributes 5 percent to your account each month.

New employees are also automatically enrolled in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan to supplement their retirement benefit.

Flexible Reimbursement Accounts (FRA)

You can choose a Medical or Dependent FRA (or both) to set aside pre-tax dollars from your paycheck to be reimsbursed for eligible out-of-pocket medical expenses or day care costs.

Virginia Sick and Disability Program (VSDP)

The VSDP provides income replacement for short and long term disability for eligible employees after 12 months of state employment.

State employees are also covered under the VSDP Long-Term Care Plan upon employment.
